Microsoft Edge

New Logo for Microsoft Edge Microsoft Edge will replace Internet Explorer as the default web browser for its latest desktop and mobile operating system, Windows 10. Internet Explorer has long been the butt of many jokes and the frustration of any living designer, coder, and developer, and its e-planet icon is one of the most well-known internet logos so for someone like me who has made many jokes at Explorer's expense and has been frustrated by it as a living designer and light coder I find it interesting/perplexing/unexpected that Microsoft would want any kind of affiliation with its browser's past. If the idea is to signal that this is a whole new kind of browser — and based on the video it sure looks like it — communicating that this is sort of like the old one is a bad strategy. What I see in the new logo is an evolution of the Internet Explorer experience not a revolution on the Windows 10 web browsing experience. Strategy aside, the new logo is kinda wonky. I will a...

Android M

Google accidentally reveals 'Android M' in new I/O schedule Summary: Will Google release Android M this May? It looks like Google will reveal the successor to Android 5.0 Lollipop at its upcoming annual I/O 2015 developer conference. Google may have inadvertently confirmed Android M will appear on May 28 after publishing a reference to the operating system in the I/O conference schedule which it published yesterday. The timing of M's release wouldn't be a surprise given that Google unveiled Lollipop at the same conference last year, but it may also suggest the company will be releasing an early preview for developers as it did with Android 5.0. The reference to Android M came under a now-removed session about an update on Google's BYOD program Android for Work, which was also announced at last year's I/O as a feature of Android Lollipop, but was released to the public only recently. The I/O session that Google subsequently removed from the sch...

Microsoft Lumia 532

Microsoft Lumia 532 Dual SIM Review: Up Against the Android Army No matter which part of the market it tries to address, Microsoft will have stiff competition from multiple Android partners. At the high end, there's really no contest - Microsoft hasn't released a new flagship since it erased Nokia's name from the catalog, and it won't until Windows 10 is ready to go later this year. Lumia models stand out in the mid-range because of their attractive styling, good cameras and decent battery life, which somewhat make up for other shortcomings. Last year, Nokia had a fair bit of success with the 52x and 62x Lumia series, which were priced well and offered enough value. Now, the budget Android landscape has shifted dramatically in the wake of a Chinese invasion. Xiaomi, Lenovo, Motorola, Asus and many others have strong grips on the sub-Rs. 10,000 market, so can Microsoft still carve out a niche? Look and feel The  Microsoft...

Apple and Microsoft

Apple and Microsoft’s visions for the future are delightfully different One wants the device at the center of your life, the other wants to make the device irrelevant Microsoft’s evolution over the past few years has brought it closer to Apple than ever before. Just like its old nemesis, the Windows company now sells its own phones and tablets, gives away OS updates for free, and runs a large network of retail stores. The first flagship Microsoft Store is, in fact, being set up only a few blocks away from Apple’s iconic cube on Fifth Avenue. But dig below these skin-deep similarities and shared geographies, and you’ll find two fundamentally different strategies. For Apple, the future of the personal computer is about making the machine even more personal. That’s the premise underlying the new Apple Watch: the idea of creating a stronger and more literal bond between the smart device and its user, who now becomes its wearer. Microsoft, on the other hand, defines i...

Microsoft Office 2016

Microsoft makes Office 2016 available as a public preview Following the first developer previews of the brand new Office 2016, Microsoft has today made available the public preview for the first time. Office 2016 is the next version of Microsoft's renowned desktop software, not to be confused with the all-new touch office apps coming with  Windows 10  for phones and small tablets. "In March we introduced an IT Pro and Developer Preview for the 2016 release of our Office desktop apps on Windows, and now—as a next step—we're ready to take feedback from a broader audience. Today we're expanding the Office 2016 Preview, making it available to Office users everywhere in preparation for general availability in Fall 2015. Office 2016 previewers will get an early look at the next release of Office on Windows desktop, but more importantly they'll help to shape and improve the future of Office. Visit the Office 2016 Preview site to learn more about the Preview...

Tim Cook's Watch

Tim Cook wears a unique Apple Watch that nobody else can buy (AAPL) Apple CEO Tim Cook wears his Apple Watch everywhere ( even in the shower ). But if you look closely at photos of his watch,  you can see that it's a totally unique model that is not available to the public.   Take a look at the photo of Cook holding an Apple Watch at the top of this article. Notice anything weird about the one he's wearing on his left wrist? Cook wears a stainless steel Apple Watch with a white sport band. That's not the unusual bit. What's different about Cook's watch is the digital crown (the circular button that sticks out). Cook's crown is capped with a section that's coloured red. You can't buy the stainless steel Apple Watch with the red crown like Cook's — Apple simply doesn't sell that type of watch. Instead, only the gold Apple Watch Edition watches come with coloured crowns — and they start at £8,000 ($12,269). So it looks like Cook i...
