Taking a look back at another week of news from Cupertino, this week’s Apple Loop looks at the benchmarking between the iPhone 6 and the Galaxy S6, Samsung will be supplying A9 chips to Apple, wireless charging on the next iPhone, happy birthday iPad, Outlook updates itself on iOS, and why the ‘iPhone killer’ is actually the Apple Watch.
Bigger Is Not Always Better As iPhone Defeats Galaxy
It’s not always about the money, or the specifications, but now the iPhone 6 hardware can be tested against the Samsung Galaxy S6 range, there are some curious quirks in the numbers. Gordon Kelly has taken a look at the differences in graphical speed on the two handsets,
"What the tests at the beginning of March found were that Samsung’s new Exynos 7420 chipset, which is at the heart of both the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, hammered the Apple A8 which is inside the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
The problem? That was just a test of the chipset, not the chipset inside the phone. So what is AppleInsider pinning the massive turnaround on? Screen resolution. In a nutshell: it takes a vastly greater overhead to drive the QHD (2560 x 1440) panels inside both new Samsung phones. The panels may be more power efficient, but that’s separate to the demand they place on other components."
The S6 might have the biggest numbers, but Apple is far more focussed on making something that works in the hand, rather than as a marketing bullet point to sell the handset.

Samsung Slips Inside Apple’s Latest Hardware |
Bloomberg is reporting that Samsung’s semi-conductor business has won the contract to build the A9 System on Chip for the next-generation iPhone. This will certainly help Samsung’s overall income during 2015, offering a certain level of financial comfort if the Galaxy S6 sales do not live up to expectations:
""Samsung will start making Apple A9 processor chips at its Giheung plant in South Korea, the people said, asking not to be identified because the contract hasn’t been discussed publicly. Additional orders will go to Samsung’s partner Globalfoundries Inc., according to another person familiar with the arrangement. Winning this order from Apple will help the world’s second-largest chipmaker rebound against TSMC, which last year ended Samsung’s monopoly over contracts to make iPhone and iPad chips. Both manufacturers have boosted capital expenditures to gain business from Apple and Qualcomm Inc. in the more than $300 billion semiconductor industry."

With Apple’s yearly release schedule of the iPhone, it’s almost guaranteed that the design of the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus is being finalised for production. That means that Jony Ive and his team will be looking to the iPhone 7 (and potentially a 7 Plus or a 7 Mini) and what can be added to the ‘almost magical’ experience.
