Microsoft’s New Browser ‘Project Spartan’ Knocks Out Internet Explorer

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — Internet Explorer fought a good fight. After so many versions, 6… 7… 8… 9… 10… IE is going down. Microsoft’s new warrior — working title, Project Spartan — will be the browser of choice for Windows 10.

Chief of marketing, Chris Capossela confirmed the kill at Microsoft Convergence, the company’s annual expo in Atlanta Monday. He said the company is still trying to figure out what to call it.

“We’re now researching what the new brand, or the new name, for our browser should be in Windows 10. We’ll continue to have Internet Explorer, but we’ll also have a new browser called Project Spartan, which is codenamed Project Spartan. We have to name the thing,” Capossela said according to The Verge.

Whatever it’s called, Project Spartan promises to “enable greater reliability and better discoverability.”

Along with a new look and simplified layout, users will be able to make annotations directly on the webpage with their keyboard or a pen. Project Spartan also integrates Microsoft’s digital assistant Cortana, which should speed up searches and sharing.

Internet Explorer will die a slow death. Capossela said there may be some versions it in Windows 10, but users should expect to eventually migrate over to Project Spartan as their primary browser.
